Intro: Hi, I’m Tanya Korteling from the UK, founder, chief content creator and wearer of all hats at the travel blog ‘Can Travel Will Travel’. This is all alongside my day job of freelance SEO, CRO, Marketing and Data Consultant and helping my husband Andy out with our YouTube Channel ‘Living in Greece’
What is your blog about?
Can Travel Will Travel was launched in 2016 to follow my husband Andy and I as they left the UK to travel, live and work abroad indefinitely
It focuses on stretches of travel, interspersed with longer stints of living and working abroad.
Our aim is to visit new places, try different activities, and sample all types of food. We LOVE food! Then, just stopping for a while and taking the time to get to know a place, immersing ourselves fully into a new culture and all it has to offer. We’re always on the lookout for off-the-beaten-track destinations and hidden gems to discover.
We see this as a way to broaden our horizons, experience new things, and undertake new challenges. All the time learning – about ourselves, the places we’re in and the people we meet.
Why did you start your blog?
I was initially encouraged to start a blog by friends and family. During my first solo long haul trip (14 months around South America in 2005 – 2007), I sent regular detailed emails back home to them telling them about and bringing to life my adventures. This was way before blogging was really a thing.
When they heard I was setting off again, this time with Andy, they insisting I should start a blog to keep them all up to date.
I then decided a blog would be a great way to document our adventures, whilst inspiring and encouraging others to do the same – to follow their dreams and ‘just give it a go’….and so it began!
You can see much more about us, our story and the blog in the ABOUT US section on our website.
What is one of your most viewed posts you’d like to share with us?
One of my most viewed posts is Explore Copper Canyon in Mexico by Train | 5-Day Itinerary
However, this is ‘Travel Blogger Greece’, so my two most viewed Greece posts have to be my Travel Guide to Ermioni and Travel Guide to Nafplio
What was one of the most memorable trips you’ve taken and written about on your blog — and why?
This is such a difficult question to answer as I’ve had so many memorable trips over the years, solo, as a couple with Andy, with friends, and with family.
I think, although of the most adventurous and memorable things I’ve done as a couple with Andy, since starting the blog, has to be hiking Acatenango Volcano in Antigua in Guatemala.
It was also one of the most challenging things we’ve done together – Andy isn’t a hiker and it took a lot to persuade him.
However, all the effort was worth it when we reached the campsite at the top. We got to spend the freezing night watching and listening to El Fuego Volcano, just opposite, erupting molten lava and smoke all through the night.
It was an incredible, bucket list experience.
What do you like most about blogging about Greece?
As one of our main focuses is sharing off-the-beaten track, I love that blogging in Greece gives me the ability to share the hidden gems and experiences. Especially those involving outdoor activities like hiking and climbing, nature and culture.
We are lucky enough to live in beautiful mainland Peloponnese, in Didyma, a tiny rural village in Ermionida. This enables us to easily road trip around the Peloponnese to places that people don’t normally visit or first think of when they are planning a trip to Greece.
We’ve also nearly finished renovating our little stone house, so I’m very excited that soon we’ll have time to explore even further afield in Greece, by road around mainland Greece and by ferry to some of the less touristy islands.
Give us one travel tip for those who have not traveled to Greece yet.
Any advice for new bloggers?
Be sure to write about what you are interested in and passionate in – not what you think other want to read. This will show through in your writing and will gain you more dedicated and engaged followers, who you can really help with your knowledge.
Also be sure to network with other content creators whenever you can. Blogging can be challenging, tough and lonely, often your ‘real life’ friends and family won’t understand, so making friends in the industry is crucial – not to mention good fun!
One place in Greece AND in the world you’d love to visit in the future that you have not been to yet.
There are sooooo many places in Greece we’ve not had chance to visit yet, so its’ very hard to pick just one. But we’ve not been to Meteora yet to see the cliff monasteries, so that’s high on the list.
In the world, I am desperate to hike Kilimanjaro and go on safari afterwards – I was supposed to do this for my 40th birthday but Covid put a stop to it. 3 years on and I’ve still not made it happen yet!
One place in the world AND in Greece you could visit over and over again.
The one place in the world I could visit again and again, has to be Cambodia, it’s like out second home (or third now we live in Greece). We’ve been visiting regularly for 15 years and have lived there twice.
In Greece, there are two places – I’m biased as we live nearby and visit regularly – but I don’t think we’ll ever get bored of going to Ermioni or Nafplio.
If you could invite five famous people to your fabulous upcoming dinner party – who would make your list?
This is difficult as not something I’ve ever given much thought to. Ummmm, let’s see….Diane Fossey, Emma (Grandma) Gatewood, Sir David Attenborough, Ed Stafford and Elizabeth Jane Cochran
